How to Earn a Living Online

Scott from BrokeToBallin.com has a great post (albeit a little old) about how to earn a living online. I thought I would share his highlights and expound with my own.  Making money online is nothing new to Scott and I’ve known him for almost a year.

Scott says, “One thing I’ve learned is that making enough money to survive on, say $100 a day, isn’t very difficult. I’m going to give you a run down of a few of the things I’ve been doing for extra money, so if you’re struggling to clear $2.00 a day with adsense, then you might want to consider some of these ideas.”

eBay Affiliate Program

Scott’s ideas include eBay affiliate program where you can literally set up a website about anything and sell your visitors on the products being sold on eBay. You make money when they buy something or create a new account with your affiliate ID. Finding these hidden niches on ebay is very easy. Just start surfing and clicking links until you find something that interests you. Decide what other products are similar and that you enjoy. Then find a niche that they both fit into. Sign up for the Commission Junction affiliate program and start making money with an affiliate program.

Write and Sell Content Sites

Scott has another idea that I don’t necessarily think is the best for sustained income but is definitely great for short term income. Scott says, “You may be surprised at what a content site with no traffic/rev can sell for. Get an account at all of the major forums, Digital Point, Site Point, ect, and just go to town, think of some niches, build a few 10 page mini sites, and you can very easily clear $100 a day with only a few hours of work, depending on how productive you can be.”

I can tell you from experience that it really is that easy. Most niche sites without any traffic sell for $50-100 depending on the seller and the niche. If your site is making a little money and has a little traffic, it will easily sell for double that. I would recommend spending some time on building each site a little before selling it. Add some affiliate links, submit it to directories, write and submit an article or two and they give it a month. After a month try to sell it for $100-200. If you do this every day you’re on your way to earning a living online.

Write, Write and Write

Scott’s last idea is to write until your fingers bleed (sorry, I added a little drama). Scott says, “Write 20 decent articles a day, figure out a way to sell them, and you’re golden.” Also from personal experience I can tell you that if you can write decently about a variety of topics and niches, you should have no problem making money online. The only limitation will be the amount of time you’re able to spend working online. If you’re single and have no obligations and are willing to put in 12 hours of hard work per day (fun work as well) then making $100-200 per day should be REALLY easy. Making $300-500 is very possible with little experience.

Making money online is really one of my favorite past times and one of the the things I enjoy most about the internet. Making money and playing Starcraft. Two of my favorite hobbies actually.

Automatically Archive Old Outlook Email

If you’re looking for a way to quickly improve your efficiency (and automate your life) I don’t know of a better place to start than with email.  For most of us, email is something necessary and so is delete old email and spam.  Email spam isn’t going away any time soon so get yourself a good spam filter, or filter your email through Gmail.  That is one of my favorite spam fighting tactics.

Lifehacker has this great little tip about how to archive your outlook email at a set interval (every day, every month, etc).   This will create a file on your hard drive every time you archive so make sure you have plenty of disk space and keep an eye on how much hard drive space this is taking up before you starting running the auto archive script daily!

This should help outlook speed up and keep it running as quickly as possible.

SEO Poker Tournament Big Success

Looks like the SEO Poker Tournament sponsored by Best of the Web, Chipotle, Planet Chiropractic and SEOish was a huge success. At the event were people famous in the SEO community such as Dave Dellanave (Shoemoney’s right hand man) and Neil Patel. At the end of the night (actually early the next morning) it was Dan Perry beating Shoemoney with the blinds at $6,000.

From the reports (I wasn’t able to play this year), Dan Klein did a fantastic job hosting the event and everyone thought it was a great success. Looks like just about everyone wants to take part in this SEO poker tournament next year.  Were there any other poker playing celebrities that I didn’t see?

Anyone know what Dan Perry won for coming in first place?

Horrible WordPress Theme #1 Downloaded?

I don’t know what people are thinking, but this theme looks like crap.  With a million free wordpress themes being available to download at any given time, why would anyone want something like this one their blog?  Maybe it’s the transparent main post area that really gets peoples goat, but I think even that looks bad.  It’s definitely not trendy, it’s very 1999.  Static looking site with rounded corners?  Maybe it’s from 2002 actually.

Actually my least favorite part of this theme is actually the header.  First of all the section to the right looks like a bad map from Duke Nukem 3D.  I feel like running around hunting big game in Africa using my BFG.

Second least favorite part is the title.  Shouldn’t it be centered in that box?  Not to mention, didn’t the designer realize that some titles will be longer than others, while some will be shorter?  Unfortunately for the 7500+ people that have downloaded this theme, you know have an ugly website.  Congratulations!

Want a good looking theme?  Check out the stuff that Emily Robbins has posted here.

Automating Web Development

I just read a great post at the Slightly Shady SEO blog.  The premise of the post is that you should be automating your daily tasks in an effort to free up more of YOU so you can continue to do things that cannot be automated.  While not true automation I have done a lot of outsourcing and given my employees a pretty free range in what they could do.  I would give them a task, i.e. mass install WordPress on these 50 domains.  Unique install for each domain with unique database and upload a unique (free) theme to each of them.

I wouldn’t give them any more direction than that.  I have done that particular task twice, one time it took the guy almost 3 days, the second time with a different guy got finished in less than one hour.  I don’t really know how he did it, but when he emailed me an hour later I was absolutely shocked.  Since I’m not really the coding type it would have taken me a full day to do what he did in 1 hour.  That is not only time saved, but money earned as well.  he definitely earned that $20/hour.  I still send him some tasks and I’m still amazed at the amount of UNIX knowledge he has.

If you’re ready to get started automating your web development you can either learn a programming language or hire someone.  I would recommend PHP and MySQL for the former and either the forums at DigitalPoint or a freelance site like eLance for the latter.

Good luck in automating your web development processes!

WordPress Plugin Shows Related Posts

One of my favorite WordPress plugins can be seen below this particular post.  It’s the similar posts plugin that shows you all of the related posts sorted by keywords.  This plugin allows you to decide how many similar posts to show and you can display them anywhere.  You can use this plugin as a widget, or just paste the code directly into your WordPress “Single Post” PHP page.

That is the way I chose to do it because it’s easiest.  The downside is that you have to recode anything you hard code whenever you want to change your theme, if you do like to change your themes.  If you’re looking for a way to make your site a little stickier and keep people browsing your site, this plugin could definitely help.

Instead of people getting to the bottom of your post and clicking the back button, the see related posts and hopefully see something else that intrigues them.

See anything below that catches your eye?

Google Bring Profiles To Your Account

Google has announced that they’ll be giving you the ability to edit and change you profile information which will be linked together with all of the Google products including finance, reader, Gmail, search history and more.

Marshall Sponder gives us a glimpse into what he thinks about the new Google-Communism approach to the internet. Marshall says, ”

My best guess is that Google Profile is part of Google’s Master Plan, but they haven’t yet explained the details of what that is, yet. Depending on whether you think Google’s Master Plan is good or not, will depend on weather you want to fill out their profile.

I for one, don’t really know for sure, and did end up filling out a profile.”

It seems that other than me, people think this is a good idea. I love the whole suite of Google products, but think that giving them more information about us is not necessarily a good idea.

Buying My Wife Flowers

Like most women, my wife loves flowers.  She doesn’t necessarily love the flowers themselves, but she loves the fact that I was thinking about her and took the time and energy to buy her those flowers.  I’ve bought flowers for her from a few different places online.  One was 1800Flowers.com, those flowers were expensive.  I’ve also ordered from ProFlowers.com.  Once they came wilted, the second time (they gave me a credit) they wilted within 2 days.  They were completely dead within 3 days.

Now, I prefer to buy my flowers at Costco.  While Costco doesn’t sell their flowers online, the flowers in the store are one of the best places to buy quality flowers, but they’re also cheap!  You can get 2 dozen (24) roses for only $14.99.

I’ve never found anybody sell them for less than that, but they’re also fresh and always in great condition.  If you prefer to have flowers delivered on a specific day, 1800Flowers is a great place to buy and have them delivered on time, but be prepared to pay a little more.

Ready to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing?

Today I was browsing the DigitalPoint forums and saw that a guy named GTAce was offering what seems to be a good deal.  He said that anyone who signs up under his affiliate link through Azoogle Ads would be trained by him for free on how to make money as an affiliate.

This is a great offer for him because he makes residual commission as you make money, and it’s obviously a good deal for you since you get free affiliate training from someone who has screenshots showing big numbers.

Check out this thread for all the details.  I’m Your Azoogle Mentor…Free!

Stats for Pro Members from Flickr

It’s about time, but Flickr is finally offering a stats package beyond the basic “views” stats currently offered.  Posted on their website December 13th, in a post titled Stats, stats, baby! Flickr announces that the stats package is only available to Pro members.

In the post, Heather Champ, gives a screenshot (blurry and small) of what the stats page looks like.  From the screenshot is looks like the page shows total view in graphical (think Google Analytics) format.  Interesting stat is the referrals including Search Engine traffic, direct links and websites that referred visitors to your Flickr pages.

The screenshot also shows all of your total stats including comments and individual picture views.
