On your drive East on Shaw Ave. you’ll see on the South East corner of Shaw and Marks (Isn’t is Marks?) the “State Bank of India”. While this is very confusing to me, it seems like a great idea.
First, the confusing part. I would assume that a “State Bank” should be in the “State” in which the bank resides. I wouldn’t expect to see a “Bank of Texas” on Blackstone Ave in Fresno. I would expect to see a “Union Bank of California” right across from this State Bank of India in Fresno.
Secondly, the good idea part. Obviously this bank is catering to Indians (not the Native Americans, Indians from India). This seems like a good idea because Punjabi isn’t commonly spoken outside of most Indian circles. Since many business owners and Indian-Americans living in Fresno speak Punjabi as a primary language, being able to bank in their native tongue appeals to many.
While I think State Bank of India is a good idea (while still confusing), a better idea for Fresno and the entire state of California (and South-West United States) is a “State Bank of Mexico”. How many Mexican-Americans would bank at a bank with “Mexico” in the title…
