There has recently been some talk about fallout shelters and underground tunnels in Fresno. Anyone have any FACTS?
Rumors say there are over 50 miles of tunnels that the Japanese used when the US was setting up internment camps. Other rumors talk about a underground fall out shelters near the Fresno Grizzlies stadium and under the Fulton mall.
Other people talk about an underground bunker under a hill at Fresno High School. Another piece of information from the Downtown area is that there was once a fall out shelter under Security National Bank including pictures of signs pointing to the old entrance, now the “House of Furniture” store. See the pictures below.

If you go to the House of Furniture on Home Run Alley you won’t see this picture as it was removed sometime after 2005. Some people say it was stolen others think it was a move by the city.
Up until just a few years ago you could have even seen signs like this pointing either to the Guarantee Savings Building or the courthouse. Some people suspect that the sign could have even rotated and then pointed to a new location.

If you have any additional information regarding fall out shelters and underground tunnels in Fresno post a comment!

At one time I believe there was a fallout shelter at the Fresno County Courthouse. Several years ago there was a tank of reserve fuel under the Hall of Records building that the County of Fresno removed because it was out of date. I also remember seeing food supplies that were being discarded. The Hall of Records is connected to the Courthouse through the garage. The Courthouse is also connected to the Count Jail via two tunnels. One is used for transport of inmates to court and the other is not used. There are tunnels all over the place, some used and some unused. Relics from our paranoid past (and present)!
