Automating Web Development

I just read a great post at the Slightly Shady SEO blog.  The premise of the post is that you should be automating your daily tasks in an effort to free up more of YOU so you can continue to do things that cannot be automated.  While not true automation I have done a lot of outsourcing and given my employees a pretty free range in what they could do.  I would give them a task, i.e. mass install WordPress on these 50 domains.  Unique install for each domain with unique database and upload a unique (free) theme to each of them.

I wouldn’t give them any more direction than that.  I have done that particular task twice, one time it took the guy almost 3 days, the second time with a different guy got finished in less than one hour.  I don’t really know how he did it, but when he emailed me an hour later I was absolutely shocked.  Since I’m not really the coding type it would have taken me a full day to do what he did in 1 hour.  That is not only time saved, but money earned as well.  he definitely earned that $20/hour.  I still send him some tasks and I’m still amazed at the amount of UNIX knowledge he has.

If you’re ready to get started automating your web development you can either learn a programming language or hire someone.  I would recommend PHP and MySQL for the former and either the forums at DigitalPoint or a freelance site like eLance for the latter.

Good luck in automating your web development processes!
