If you’re new to digital photography and looking to get cheap studio lighting, there is no cheaper and easier way than a run to Home Depot and Wal-Mart. I know, before you hit that back button, just hear me out.

Home Depot, one of the largest DIY stores in the world, has a wide assortment of halogen shop lights. These are the lights you’ll want to pick up.

Halogen Shop Lights

My actual lights have two heads and they’re on a stand. Each light is 250 watts. You want to make sure each light is at least 150w. You’ll want some lights facing your subject, lights to the right of your subject and a fill light behind your subject. You’ll want each of these lights to be the same because the color tone for different lights is different.

Once you get these lights, plug them in, set your white balance (auto white balance should be pretty good), and you’re ready to shoot!
