If you’re looking for an easy and quick way to get serial numbers off of a lot of Mac (Apple) computers, then using Apple Remote Desktop is the way to go! Once the computers are turned on, getting the serial numbers for 100+ machines is very fast and easy and only takes about 5 minutes.
Here is how you do it.
1. Start Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) software to get serial numbers.
2. Highlight the computers that you need to get the serial number for.
3. At the top menu click “Report” then “System Overview”.
4. Uncheck all boxes. Check “Serial Number” under “Computer”.
5. IMPORTANT - Click “Rebuild Data for this report”. If you don’t select that, you usually won’t get the correct serial number and will get another different, yet similar, serial looking number.
6. The serial numbers will pop up by computer name, the window is usually automatically hidden behind the main ARD window.
7. Click “Export”.
There you go, simple and plain way to get serial numbers from Mac computers in bulk!
NOTE: I have tried this in Tiger and Panther. I don’t know for sure that it works in Leopard but would guess that it does. Make sure your ARD machine and the client machines have the latest ARD Update 3.2.1 in order to get correct serial numbers.
